Actively looking for work!

And the Universe said I love you because you are love.

About me

My name is Zephyr "lolbatz" Laytart, I use he/they pronouns, and I am a 2D/3D character artist/animator and game design generalist based in California! I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2023 with a Bachelor's in Art and Design: Games and Playable Media, and I am currently working freelance and looking for work involving art, animation, character design, generalist game development, and so on!I was an officer for the UCSC club GDA for two years! GDA is a special club which affords students a game development environment that emulates a real studio, producing 1-2 fully polished small-medium sized games every school year! When I worked with GDA, I was a Production Officer, meaning I...
- Co-hosted production meetings every week with another officer!
- Ran workshops in the fall, introducing club members to concepts and strategies of game production!
- Took care of club officer responsibilities such as weekly officer meetings and the occasional moderation/conflict resolution!
- Helped out as a community organizer, specifically as the club grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, hosting fun online community events, figuring out fun ways to meet up with each other safely, and keeping track of COVID-19 protocol required of club events.
I remain active in students' games spaces, and seek opportunities to collaborate with both fellow alumni and current students in whatever creative projects seem interesting to me. Once I grow my career further, I plan to come back to GDA as a guest speaker to share my experience working within the games and other creative digital art industries.I have a strong desire to continue my education, and aspirations for grad school and beyond. My heart is leading me towards teaching, what with all of the workshop-leading and community-building I have done surrounding games, and my dream is to become a professor and share the knowledge and experience I will continue to gain with the next generation of young game developers, artists, coders, and nerds alike.

Projects

Bubblebeast Digidungeon is my latest completed project, which I worked on with some of my friends! Play BBDD on Steam here!NEWS: BBDD will be tabling at Seattle Indies Expo this year!

Throughout this project, I have...

  • Worked closely with the game lead and my co-artist to iterate on character concepts for multiple characters, creating final character designs that are cohesive, identifiable, and extremely adorable!

  • Rendered talksprites with expressive poses and memorable movements, keeping in mind the correct aspect ratio and export requirements for sprite implementation within Unity!

  • Expanded on creative direction and concepts for the game, such as theming each of the characters around different flavors and displaying the sprites with sticker-like backgrounds!

  • Playtested and provided feature recommendations, gameplay feedback, and glitch-hunting!

  • Vouched for various accessibility options that were incorporated into the game, such as making sure that each flavor of bubble was distinguishable regardless of factors like color blindness!

  • Illustrated an album cover for the Official BBDD Soundtrack!

I was a production officer for GDA's game, Tacocat!

Throughout this project, I have...

  • Worked together with my co-lead to create production workshops, in which we taught concepts such as scope, SCRUM, agile development, sprints, and how to use different product management sites, such as Jira, Trello, and Spreadsheets!

  • Co-led online production SCRUM meetings with each department's producers, leading them through their department's accomplishments, goals, and roadblocks!

  • Kept peace between the different department producers and the game leads, incorporating conflict-resolution strategies to ensure that all voices felt heard as they discussed difficult, co-dependent roadblocks and issues with the game's scope and progress.

  • Tackled general club-related officer responsibilities alongside these workshops and meetings, including attending regular officer meetings, addressing safety concerns, and participating in community events!

  • Moderated an online Discord community and helped facilitate online events, as well as hybrid and in-person events!

  • Maintained COVID-19 safety compliance within club meetings.

FruitBatPlatformer
is a cute, educational platformer demo that I made to practice Unity!

Throughout this project, I have...

  • Established the core pillars of my game's design, being: a cute, simple physics-based platformer; a game which educates the player on some of the human-created hazards to fruit bats; and an opportunity to get hands-on experience with Unity development by myself!

  • Studied the basics of Unity's 2D game development capabilities, including camera movement based on room changes, physics objects with variable mass, hitboxes and collision, and level restarting!

  • Implemented puzzle-like platformer level design with an intended audience of new gamers or younger children, with simple and fun obstacles showcasing different types of fruits and demoing their behaviors!

  • Prepared assets for the game, including various fruits, tileable and repeatable background components, and player character sprites!

  • Tried out Unity's in-engine player character animation capabilities to change the sprites of the character depending on the player's input!

  • Managed scope throughout the development of this game, in order to adhere to project deadlines, setting aside stretch goals and focusing on aspects of the game that upheld its core objectives.

Kirby Ally Adventure
is a board game adaptation of the game Kirby Star Allies, available for free as a workshop item for Tabletop Simulator!

Throughout this project, I have...

  • Designed systems and rules for a multiplayer board game experience that pays respects to the gameplay of Kirby Star Allies, finding interesting ways to translate a platformer's mechanics into the play style of a board game!

  • Utilized Tabletop Simulator's innate tools to draft board game systems and dynamics!

  • Worked with my team to design cards, encounters, and abilities which modified the stats of the players who acquired them, negotiating ways to implement things like Kirby abilities into a board game format!

  • Implemented all of the assets into Tabletop Simulator, prepared the workshop item, and recorded gameplay footage!

  • Illustrated a board for the game which gives players options for movement that encourages decision-making!

  • Coordinated development online and asynchronously with fellow classmates during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Check out my ongoing webcomic, Survive Object Poll Island!

Throughout this project, I have...

  • Designed characters who are appealing, eye-catching, and have scalable complexity, for efficient panel creation!

  • Gained experience with maintaining a long-term narrative project; SOPI has been running for over two years!

  • Experimented with ARG-like elements which encourage audience participation, such as: translating secret codes, affecting the story directly through polls, and interacting with the characters themselves through asks!

  • Grown a creative and welcoming Discord community!

  • Designed and sold merchandise for the comic!

I helped out with outfit design and touching up some sprite assets for this UCSC student capstone game, Ye Guild Clerk!
